FRENCH AT KEY STAGE 3


Every student at Key Stage 3 will learn French as a compulsory language.

Aims

  • To stimulate students' interest and motivation
  • To make learning an enjoyable experience
  • To develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of French in a range of contexts and topics.
  • To develop the ability to communicate effectively in French using a range of vocabulary and structures.
  • To develop knowledge and outstanding of the French grammar and the ability to apply it.
  • To develop positive attitudes to French learning and language learning.
  • To foster an awareness and understanding of the social, cultural background of countries where French is spoken.
  • To provide balance and variety to suit the needs of a range of study.
  • To arrange the content in an appropriate sequence to offer progression and allow development of skills.

Objectives


The students will be encouraged to work independently both at school and at home. They will be encouraged to organise their time to do the homework on time.They will learn to respect the views of other members of the group while expressing their own. Students will also maximum the use of French in the classroom, but be encouraged to listen to French tapes and to watch videos in French.

Dictionaries


Good dictionary skills are vital for language learning. The French classroom is equipped with dictionaries, but it is very much in the students interests to have their own dictionaries to help with homework. Students are also required to purchase a tape recorder which they will use for their spoken French homework.

Assessment methods


The students will be assessed formally and continually: By observing their responsive attitude and interaction in class. By listening to them, By keeping records of mini-tests. By regular testing (vocabulary/ grammar points) will form part of assessment pattern and contribute to self-assessment record of progress at the end of year examinations. Each attainment target will carry equal weighting.

Aims


The course will encourage students to
  • Develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of French in a range of contexts and topics
  • Develop the ability to communicate effectively in French using a range of vocabulary and structures
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the French grammar and the ability to apply it
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where French is spoken
  • Develop positive attitudes to French learning
  • Provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of French.

Assessment

There are two tiers of assessment: Foundation (G-C) and Higher (D-A*).

Module 1 is available in the January series only

Listening 5% - 35 minutes
Reading 5% - 40 minutes
Speaking 5% - coursework

Module 2 is available in the June series only (normally Year 10)

Listening 7.5%-25 minutes
Reading 7.5%-30 minutes

Module 3 is available in the January series only

Speaking 7.5%
Writing 12.5%

Module 4 is available in the June series only (normally Year 11)

Listening 12.5%-25 minutes
Reading 12.5%-30 minutes
Speaking 12.5%- 5 to 8 minutes
Writing 12.5%- 40 to 50 minutes.
